Can You Wear Sunglasses at Night?

No. And the yellow-lens night-driving glasses marketed as the answer were tested and did not improve anything. Here is what actually helps.

No. Wearing sunglasses at night is unsafe, because any tint reduces the light reaching your eyes at exactly the moment you have too little of it. And the yellow-tinted "night driving glasses" sold as a solution to headlight glare do not work either — a controlled study found they did not improve pedestrian detection or reduce the effect of glare.

This is one of the few questions in eyewear with a genuinely clear answer, so we will give it plainly and then explain what to do instead. Sunglasses exist to reduce light. At night your visual system is already operating near its limit: your pupils are wide open, your color vision is largely offline, and your ability to resolve detail is a fraction of what it is in daylight. Removing more light from that situation makes everything worse. A polarized lens is no exception — polarization removes reflected light, which at night includes the reflections off road markings and wet surfaces that you are relying on to read the road.

What about yellow "night driving" glasses?

This is the product people actually mean when they ask the question, and the honest answer deserves the evidence rather than an opinion. Yellow-tinted lenses are widely sold with claims of reducing headlight glare and sharpening night vision, on the theory that filtering blue light reduces scatter.

Researchers tested this directly. A cohort study published in JAMA Ophthalmology in 2019 compared pedestrian detection during simulated night driving, with and without yellow-lens glasses, both with and without headlight glare. The finding: the yellow lenses did not appear to improve pedestrian detection at night, and did not reduce the negative effect of headlight glare on detection performance. The authors concluded that the results did not support eye care professionals recommending yellow-lens night-driving glasses to patients.

There is also a mechanical reason to be skeptical before you even reach the data. A yellow lens is still a filter, and every filter reduces total light transmission. At night, reducing light transmission is working against you. Any subjective sense that glare is "softer" is largely a consequence of the whole scene being dimmer — including the pedestrian you needed to see.

Why headlight glare feels worse than it used to

The complaint behind this search is real, even though the product sold against it does not work. Modern LED and HID headlights are brighter and have a different spectral distribution than the halogen lamps most drivers grew up with, and vehicle ride heights have risen, which puts more oncoming light closer to eye level. Age matters too: the lens inside your eye scatters more light as you get older, so the same headlight produces a bigger halo at 60 than at 25.

That means the answer is not a tint. It is reducing scatter and improving contrast in the optical path you actually have.

What genuinely helps

  • Clean the inside of your windshield. The single highest-impact thing on this list. A film of haze on the inside of the glass scatters oncoming headlights across your entire field of view. Most drivers have never cleaned it.
  • Clean your glasses, properly. Smears and fine scratches on a lens scatter light exactly the same way. Our cleaning guide has the method that will not add more scratches.
  • Ask about an anti-reflective coating.If you wear prescription glasses at night, an AR coating reduces the internal reflections off the lens surfaces that produce halos and ghosting. This is a genuine, optician-supported improvement — unlike a yellow tint.
  • Get your eyes checked. A sudden increase in night glare can indicate an uncorrected refractive change or an early cataract, both of which scatter light. This is worth a professional opinion rather than a product purchase.
  • Look away from oncoming lights. Direct your gaze toward the right edge of your lane and use the road markings as a guide while a bright vehicle passes, rather than looking at it.
  • Dim your dashboard. A bright instrument panel keeps your eyes partly light-adapted, which reduces how well you see the darker road ahead.

Are there any legitimate reasons to wear tinted lenses after dark?

A few, and they are all medical or specialized rather than about driving. People with photophobia or light sensitivity from migraine, concussion or certain eye conditions are sometimes advised by a clinician to use tinted lenses in bright artificial indoor light — that is a treatment prescribed by a professional, not a driving aid. And a driver going straight from a brightly-lit indoor environment into the dark can reduce the adaptation shock by wearing sunglasses indoors beforehand and removing them at the door, which is a real technique rather than a product.
