UV Protection in Sunglasses, Explained (UV400 vs Everything Else)

The one spec that protects your eye health — and the one most people misunderstand. What UV400 means, and why it has nothing to do with price, tint, or polarization.

UV400 is the spec that matters. It means the lens blocks ultraviolet light up to 400 nanometers — which covers essentially all UVA and UVB — and it is the single most important thing a pair of sunglasses does for your eyes. Critically, UV protection is unrelated to price, to how dark the lens is, and to whether it is polarized. A fifteen-dollar pair and a two-hundred-dollar pair can both be UV400, and a dark or polarized lens can still have weak UV protection if it is not rated. Always confirm the rating.

Most people buy sunglasses for comfort and glare, and treat UV as a given. It is not a given, and it is the one feature that protects your long-term eye health rather than just your comfort today. Here is what UV protection actually is, why it is separate from everything else on the spec sheet, and how to make sure you have it.

UVA, UVB, and what UV400 blocks

Ultraviolet light is the invisible, higher-energy radiation just beyond the violet end of visible light. The part that reaches the ground splits into two bands that matter here: UVB (roughly 280–315 nanometers), the more energetic band associated with sunburn and surface eye damage, and UVA (roughly 315–400 nanometers), which penetrates deeper. Visible light starts at about 400 nanometers, so a lens that blocks everything up to 400 nm — UV400 — blocks essentially all UVA and UVB. That is why "UV400" and "100% UVA/UVB" and "100% UV protection" all describe the same thing: full protection across the ultraviolet band that reaches your eyes. The Cleveland Clinic and The Vision Council both underline UV protection as the health priority in eyewear.

Why UV protection is unrelated to price and tint

This is the part that surprises people. UV blocking comes from the lens material and a UV-absorbing treatment, not from the tint you see. A clear pair of safety glasses can be fully UV400; a very dark fashion lens can have almost no UV protection. Darkness only reduces visible brightness — it does nothing to UV on its own. And a cheap lens can carry the same UV400 rating as a premium one, because adding UV protection costs almost nothing. What you pay more for is optical clarity, contrast tuning, durability, and frame quality — not more UV protection.

There is a real danger hidden in this: a dark lens withoutUV protection is worse for your eyes than no sunglasses at all. In bright light your pupils constrict to protect the retina; a dark lens fools your eyes into dilating to let more light in, and if that lens does not block UV, it lets more ultraviolet reach your wide-open pupils. So "dark" is not "safe." Only the UV rating tells you it is safe.

UV protection is not polarization

These two features get conflated constantly, so to be blunt: polarization cuts visible glare, UV protection blocks invisible radiation, and they are completely independent. A lens can be polarized with poor UV protection, or UV400 without any polarization. Buy a pair that is confirmed both. Lens categories: darkness is its own scale

Separate from UV is how much visible light a lens lets through — its darkness. The international lens standard (ISO 12312-1, mirrored in regional standards) sorts lenses into filter categories 0 through 4 by visible-light transmission, and it is useful to recognize:

  • Category 0:clear to very light tint, roughly 80–100% light transmission — indoor or fashion use.
  • Category 1:light tint, about 43–80% — low sun and overcast.
  • Category 2:medium tint, about 18–43% — average sun.
  • Category 3:dark tint, about 8–18% — bright sun; the most common sunglass category.
  • Category 4:very dark, about 3–8% — extreme glare like high mountains or open water, and not legal for driving in many places because it is too dark.

The key point: this category is about brightness, not UV. A Category 1 lens and a Category 4 lens can both be UV400. Pick the darkness for your conditions and confirm UV separately.

How to make sure you actually have UV protection

You cannot see or test UV blocking at home the way you can test polarization, so you have to rely on the rating and the source. Look for a clear "UV400" or "100% UVA/UVB" label from a reputable brand or retailer, and be cautious with unbranded pairs that make no UV claim at all — a missing claim is a red flag. Reputable optical shops can also measure UV transmission on a photometer if you want certainty on a pair you already own. UVA, UVB, and UVC: what actually reaches your eyes

Ultraviolet light comes in three bands, and it is worth knowing which ones matter. UVC (roughly 100–280 nanometers) is the most energetic but is absorbed almost entirely by the atmosphere and the ozone layer, so it does not reach you at ground level — you can set it aside. UVB(about 280–315 nm) does reach the surface and is the band most associated with sunburn and with surface damage to the eye. UVA(about 315–400 nm) reaches you in the greatest quantity and penetrates deeper into the eye. Because both UVA and UVB get to your eyes and visible light starts around 400 nm, a lens rated to block everything up to 400 nm — UV400 — covers the entire practical UV threat. That single number is what you are checking for; there is no separate spec you need on top of it.

What UV does to your eyes over time

UV damage to the eyes is cumulative, which is why protection matters long before you notice any problem. Eye-health authorities including the Cleveland Clinic link long-term UV exposure to cataracts (a clouding of the lens), to a role in some macular degeneration, and to growths on the eye surface such as pterygium and pinguecula. Intense short-term exposure causes photokeratitis — essentially a sunburn of the cornea, the painful "snow blindness" skiers and welders get — which is temporary but miserable. The skin around the eyes, some of the thinnest on the body, is also prone to sun damage that good coverage helps shade. None of this requires a bright, obviously sunny day to accumulate, which is the whole argument for wearing genuine UV protection routinely rather than occasionally.

Reflection and altitude multiply your exposure

Your UV dose is not just about the sun overhead; it is about what bounces up at you. Fresh snow can reflect a very large share of UV back into your eyes, which is why snow sports demand real protection and why photokeratitis is common on the slopes. Water and light sand reflect a meaningful amount too, so a day on the boat or the beach is a double dose — direct plus reflected — and exactly why anglers should treat UV400 as mandatory, a point that ties back to our fishing lens guide. Wraparound coverage helps here as much as the lens rating, because it blocks the UV that would otherwise sneak in around the edges of a small frame.

Kids, and why coverage counts

Children's eyes let more UV through than adults' do, and kids spend a lot of time outside, so a genuine UV400 pair that actually fits and stays on matters at least as much for them as for you. The same logic applies to anyone choosing a frame: UV protection is only as good as the light it blocks from reaching the eye, so a well-fitting wrap that shades the sides and a UV400 rating together do more than a rating alone. Fit and coverage are part of UV protection, not separate from it.

UV is separate from tint, polarization, and price

It is worth repeating because it is the most common and most costly misunderstanding in sunglasses: UV protection is its own thing. It is not the tint (darkness only cuts visible brightness), it is not polarization (that cuts visible glare), and it is not a mirror or photochromic coating. A lens can carry any combination of those features and still block little UV if it is not rated to, and it can be a pale, cheap, non-polarized lens and still be full UV400. How much should real UV400 cost?

Almost nothing extra, which is the encouraging part. Adding genuine UV protection to a lens is inexpensive, so full UV400 shows up on pairs costing well under twenty dollars just as it does on premium ones. That means there is never a budget reason to skip it; if a pair does not clearly state UV400 or 100% UVA/UVB, that is a reason to distrust the whole product, not a corner worth cutting to save money. Spend more if you want better optics, contrast, durability, or a frame that lasts — but do not spend more expecting more UV protection, because the cheap pair with a real rating already gives you all of it.

Why this matters

Cumulative UV exposure is linked by eye-health authorities to conditions that develop over years, which is why the protection matters even on days that do not feel especially bright — overcast skies and reflection off water, snow, and sand all still deliver UV. Getting a genuine UV400 pair is cheap and simple, and it is the one sunglasses decision that is unambiguously about your health rather than your preference. Sort UV first; then choose tint, polarization, and fit for how you actually use the pair, whether that is polarized everyday wear or a dedicated sport lens.
